TALS Honors Congressman Steve Cohen with Legislative Leadership Award
The Tennessee Alliance for Legal Services was pleased to participate in the celebration for the 40th anniversary of the founding of Memphis Area Legal Services by honoring Congressman Steve Cohen with the 2010 Legislative Leadership Award.
“Memphis Area Legal Services has helped thousands of people over the years,” said Congressman Cohen. “Whether you’re facing domestic violence, mortgage foreclosure or predatory lending, Memphis Area Legal Services is there when you need help. It is vital that we work to ensure that those who need a lawyer get the legal representation they deserve. I am honored to receive such a prestigious award.”
Congressman Cohen, a longtime champion of civil legal assistance for vulnerable populations, is the chair of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Commercial and Administrative Law. Cohen’s contributions to the civil legal service community’s efforts for equal justice include working to reauthorize the Legal Services Corporation Act and authoring the Justice Integrity Act. The Tennessee Alliance for Legal Services’ 2010 Legislative Leadership Award was given particularly for his leadership to increase Legal Services Corporation funding to serve low-income clients nationwide and in Tennessee.

- To involve more lawyers and law students in meeting legal needs so that the public is better served.
- To provide greater educational opportunities and resources for policymakers, self-represented litigants, the community, lawyers, court personnel and others.
- To make the justice system more user-friendly.
- To remove barriers to access to justice, including, but not limited to, disability, language, literacy and geography.
